Dhenkanal: A BTech student was arrested for his alleged involvement in a scuffle at a private engineering college in Dhenkanal, police said on Sunday.
The accused has been identified as Pratyush Kumar Sahu (21), a student of the same institution. He was arrested by Dhenkanal Town Police in connection with a clash between two groups of students on the college campus located on the outskirts of the town.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Saturday at around 1 pm following a personal dispute between two groups. It is alleged that Pratyush called in some outsiders, who then assaulted a third-year student, Jhadeswar Mallik (25), leaving him injured.
The attackers were reportedly armed with a pistol and allegedly fired shots in the air during the altercation, creating panic on the campus.
The injured student was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. After being discharged, he lodged a complaint at Dhenkanal Town Police Station.
Based on the complaint, police initiated an investigation, leading to the arrest of the accused. He was produced before a local court on Sunday.
Police said no concrete leads have yet been found regarding the involvement of the other persons in the scuffle or the alleged firing. “The investigation is ongoing,” said Madhusmita Nathsharma, Inspector-in-Charge of Dhenkanal Town Police Station.
