Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Monday arrested a doctor of Capital Hospital here for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000 from an NGO functionary for signing work certificates required for release of salaries of employees engaged by the organisation.

The accused was identified as Dr Satyajit Behera, Assistant Surgeon at Capital Hospital, the Vigilance said in an official statement.

According to the statement, the NGO had been engaged by the hospital to assist unknown and destitute patients arriving at the casualty department for treatment. Its functionary had allegedly been requesting Behera since June to sign the work certificates of the NGO’s employees for drawal of their salaries for June and July 2026.

However, Behera allegedly demanded Rs 30,000 from the NGO functionary for signing the certificates. After facing the alleged bribe demand and harassment, the complainant reported the matter to Odisha Vigilance.

Acting on the complaint, a Vigilance team laid a trap on Monday and apprehended Behera while he was allegedly accepting Rs 30,000 from the complainant. The tainted money was recovered and seized from his possession, the statement said.

Following the trap, simultaneous searches were launched at three locations linked to Behera as part of a disproportionate assets probe, it added.

In connection with the case, Bhubaneswar Vigilance Police Station Case No. 19 dated August 16, 2026, has been registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.

Investigation into the case is underway, the Vigilance said.
