Bhubaneswar: The Special Task Force of Crime Branch on Saturday busted a cattle smuggling racket with the rescue of 155 animals from a 16-wheeler truck at Panikoili.
The raid was carried out by the STF at Sahapur Hat Padi under Panikoili police limits in Jajpur district. Two persons arrested in this case have been identified as Kamar Siyajuddin Khan of Gujidadra (Bhadrak Rural) and Mohammed Karim of Kantabania (Bhadrak Town).
The duo was booked for illegal and inhuman transportation of cattle. The cattle were being smuggled to West Bengal. During search, 155 cattles, a 16-1wheeler truck, cash of Rs 34,500 and other incriminating materials were recovered from the accused.
The accused were handed over to Panikoili police for further action. A number of cattle were injured and sick for which veterinarians were called to treat them, a senior STF official said.
“The rescued cattle were shifted to the nearest cattleshed at Jajpur Road for their care and safety. A case has been registered by Panikoili police under Sections 429/120(B)/34 of the IPC, Section of 11 Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, and Section192(A) MV Act.
