Sundargarh: The Sundargarh district administration on Monday evening handed over the mentally challenged mother-daughter duo, who were rescued by local MLA Kusum Tete last Friday after they were found wandering on the city streets, to their family members and sent home.
According to reports, the Sundargarh Police and the Social Security Department took the initiative to trace the relatives of the women, identified as Maima and Long, in Chhattisgarh and handed them over to them. The Sundargarh Town Police under the leadership of Sundargarh SDPO brought the sister and younger daughter of the elder woman from Kharibhal village of Chhattisgarh and recorded her statement. Later, in the evening, the woman’s brother also came to the police station. A collective decision was taken to send the two mentally ill women home.
The police arranged for a vehicle to send them to their village in Chhattisgarh in the presence of the Town Police station officer and Astha Gruha authorities.
It is worth mentioning here that earlier it was alleged that the women were sexually exploited by a relative. However, family members who came from Chhattisgarh to take the women said that they were not victims of sexual assault, but were mentally disturbed following the death of a male family member sometime back.
