Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the family of a college student from Sundargarh district, who succumbed to severe burn injuries at Ispat General Hospital (IGH), Rourkela, earlier in the day.

The student, who studied at Sarbati Devi Women’s College, Rajgangpur, had reportedly sustained 90 per cent burns after allegedly setting herself on fire. She had been undergoing treatment since Friday.

Expressing profound grief over the incident, the Chief Minister extended his condolences to the bereaved family. The ex gratia amount will be released from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).

According to reports, the girl set herself ablaze at her residence on December 5 (Friday), allegedly due to persistent harassment by a married man working as a helper on a bus. She was rushed to IGH in critical condition. The accused was arrested on Saturday evening following the registration of an FIR.
