Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday lauded Dr. K. Lakshmi Bai on her 100th birthday for her extraordinary gesture of donating her personal savings of Rs 3.40 crore to establish a Gynaecological Oncology course at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. The Chief Minister described her act as ‘a beacon of compassion and public service.’
Taking to social media platform X, CM Majhi wrote, “Dr. Lakshmi Bai is a true torch-bearer of dignity, care and women’s empowerment, her decades of dedicated medical service continue to inspire generations. People like her strengthen our collective resolve to build a healthier, more empowered society.”
“Our government remains committed to advancing quality healthcare for all. Odisha takes immense pride in her remarkable life and selfless devotion to humanity. May Mahaprabhu Jagannath bless her with good health, strength, and peace,” he added.
Meanwhile, the retired professor of gynaecology at MKCG Medical College and Hospital also donated Rs 3 lakh to the Berhampur Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society to support adolescent vaccination drives aimed at preventing cancer among women.
Reflecting on her long medical career, Dr. Lakshmi Bai said she had treated numerous women who suffered from cancer, many of whom died due to lack of proper treatment.
“I hope the amount is utilized for the benefit of such poor and helpless women,” she said.
Her philanthropic contribution is seen as a significant step in promoting specialised healthcare and medical education in the state, particularly in women’s health.
