Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday announced an increase in ex gratia assistance to Rs 10 lakh for the families of Odia workers who died in an ammonia gas leak incident at a seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district.
The ex gratia, which was earlier fixed at Rs 4 lakh per deceased worker from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF), was enhanced during the day as the state government reviewed the situation following the rising death toll.
Expressing deep grief over the tragedy, the Chief Minister conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and assured all possible support from the government.
The incident occurred on Sunday (June 21) at a seafood processing unit in Tiruvallur, where an ammonia gas leak left several workers injured, including migrant labourers from Odisha.
The death toll of Odia workers rose to seven on Tuesday after Jamuni Juang of Keonjhar district succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment. All seven deceased workers hailed from Keonjhar district.
