Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today announced the recruitment of 5,000 Home Guards soon to bolster the police force in Odisha.

Speaking at the launch of 30 emergency response support vehicles under the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) scheme for the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Commissionerate Police, Chief Minister Majhi highlighted the state’s commitment to enhancing law and order, while informing that there are around 10,000 vacancies  in the Home Department.

He announced that the recruitment drive will include filling 2,416 vacant positions and creating 2,584 new posts for Home Guards.

Additionally, the government has lifted restrictions imposed on Home Guard recruitment since 2020. The daily allowances for Home Guards will also be increased as part of measures to acknowledge their contribution to the state’s security, Majhi said.

Highlighting the deployment of 30 ERSS vehicles, the Chief Minister stated that these specialized vehicles would replace defunct PCR vans and strengthen police responsiveness during emergencies. “These vehicles are symbols of justice, law and order, and a fear-free, crime-free society,” he remarked. Of the 30 vehicles, 22 will be stationed in Bhubaneswar and 8 in Cuttack.

In addition, Chief Minister Majhi announced plans to induct high-speed patrol vehicles to improve police efficiency in responding to emergencies, reaching both victims and criminals quickly. He further emphasized the state government’s ongoing efforts to elevate the image and capacity of the police force by working closely with communities.

The event, held at the Commissionerate Police office, was attended by key dignitaries, including Director General of Police Y B Khurania, who praised the ERSS vehicles for their commendable service during Cyclone Dana.

Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department Satyabrata Sahu, Additional Director General of Police Dayal Gangwar were present in the program. Commissioner of Police S. Dev Datta Singh gave the vote of thanks.
