Bhubaneswar: On the occasion of three years of the Drink from Tap Mission, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday launched the 24-hour water supply facility in 149 wards of 13 other cities including five cities of Odisha. It is worth noting that the Drink from Tap programme allows the public to get clean drinking water directly from the tap. It does not require filtering tap water.
Attending the event held at the Lok Seva Bhavan Convention Center in Bhubaneswar, the Chief Minister said, “Water is priceless. There is life in every drop of water. So our Drink From Tap scheme aims to provide safe drinking water to all. Today, Odisha is successfully leading the way in transformation. Odisha has become a model for the entire country today with the implementation of the 5T initiative, the Drink From Tap scheme. The success of our mothers is also a model for others today.”
“Our Mission Shakti Maa, Water Partners are doing a great job in the field of urban water supply.” Also, the Chief Minister appreciated that WATCO, with its dedicated efforts, has made a major transformation in Odisha’s water supply sector and continues to work towards setting a new benchmark in the field of drinking water supply in our country and other progressive countries, making the state proud.
It is worth noting that today the Chief Minister launched a 24-hour drinking water supply facility in five cities namely Rairangpur, Champua, Birmitrapur, Rajgangpur, and Nimapada. About 1.80 lakh people of about 30,000 families in these cities will be benefited from this. Similarly, this facility has been started for 149 wards of 13 cities namely Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Rourkela, Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Besnagar, Khurda, Jatni, Anandpur, Joda, Badbil and Hinjalikatur. About 10.50 lakh people in these wards will benefit from this. More than two lakh families will get access to clean drinking water.
The Chief Minister said that the work for water supply to the remaining wards of these 13 urban areas is going on and soon the people of these wards will get clean drinking water supply facilities.
Usha Devi, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, participating in the programme, said that the poor and weaker sections of the economy will be especially benefited from the 24-hour supply of clean drinking water. Owing to the vision of the Chief Minister has become a model for other states and countries today.
Executive Director of the International Water Association of England, Dr. Kalanithy Vairavmoorthy participated in the programme and said that Drink From Tap programme is a unique example in Odisha. He never dreamed that such a system would be possible in India during his lifetime. He said that this was possible only because of the strong political and visionary leadership of Odisha’s Chief Minister. Opining that the application of technology in this program has made it more successful, he said that there is a great need for the people of other states and other countries to know about the success story of Odisha.
