Bhadrak: In a bizarre incident, three cobra snakes were rescued during a wedding procession in Chhedak village under the Dhamra-Bansada gram panchayat in Bhadrak district late Wednesday night.
The reptiles were reportedly used during a dance performance to a popular “nagin” (snake) song.
According to reports, the wedding celebration featured a performance where a snake charmer and two transgender persons were seen dancing with live cobras. The act was part of the festivities and was cheered on by attendees, many of whom captured the performance on their mobile phones.
On being alerted, a team from the Bhadrak Wildlife Department reached the spot as the procession moved through the village. The officials managed to intercept the group near Ugratara Chhak on Chandbali Road and rescued the three snakes, which were later secured in separate cages.
“We are currently investigating the identity of the snake charmer. Three snakes have been seized. The STF has been roped in to probe who exactly was involved in using the snakes during the dance performance,” said Soubhagya Kumar Sahu, Divisional Forest Officer (Wildlife), Bhadrak.
The use of wild animals in public performances without proper authorization is a violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Legal action is expected against those found responsible.
