Bhubaneswar: In view of the increasing incidents of road mishaps, the Commissionerate Police has taken stringent measures to curb drunk driving in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. According to Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh, the Commissionerate Police has decided to act tough against tipsy drivers to curb accidents as well as fatalities due to drunk driving.
Sources in the Commissionerate Police said that henceforth driving in a drunken state may invite a hefty penalty of Rs 5000 in the area under the Urban Police District (UPD). At the same time, the driver’s licence may also be cancelled if he/she meets with an accident while driving under the influence of alcohol.
Bhubaneswar DCP told the media on Wednesday, “More than 80 per cent of accidental deaths are due to drunk driving. Hence, we are taking all necessary measures to curb drunk driving by taking stringent action against the violators.”
It is worth mentioning here that Odisha witnessed a 7.6 per cent increase in road accident deaths in 2022 compared to the fatalities in 2021, while there was a 29 per cent increase in road accident deaths from 2014 to 2021.
