Jeypore: A contractor has been arrested in Koraput for allegedly cheating two persons out of Rs 40 lakh. The accused, Upendra Mohanty, residing in Saraswati Nagar, Semiliguda, was working as a contractor and allegedly took advantage of his profession to deceive the victims.
Sungadi Damu, 28, from Beheraguda, filed a complaint on July 28, 2025, stating that Upendra Mohanty took Rs 20 lakh from him in three instalments through cheques, promising to build a house. However, after receiving the money, Mohanty absconded and switched off his mobile phone.
In another incident, Prafula Kumar Pangi, 58, from Saraswati Nagar, Semiliguda, filed a complaint on August 23, 2025, stating that Upendra Mohanty took Rs 20 lakh from him, assuring repayment within two months. Mohanty failed to return the money and absconded from Semiliguda.
The police registered two separate cases against Mohanty under Section 318(4) BNS and arrested him. He will be forwarded to the Court.
Police also seized laa ptop, mobile phones from his possession.
