Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Forecast In Odisha Till Sept 10; Yellow Alert Issued

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Odisha under a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across most districts till September 10. The warning, issued in the IMD Bhubaneswar Centre’s midday bulletin on Friday, cautions that heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh.

Forecast and Warnings for Odisha

  • Day 1 (till morning of Sept 6):
    Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely at many places across Odisha. Heavy rain with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) are forecast for Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are also expected at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nawarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
  • Day 2 (Sept 6–7):
    Similar conditions are likely to persist with light to moderate rain or thundershower at many places. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) are very likely in coastal and interior districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and several western and southern districts.
  • Day 3 (Sept 7–8):
    Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely at a few places. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) may occur in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
  • Day 4 (Sept 8–9):
    Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely at a few places in coastal and north interior Odisha, and at one or two places in south interior Odisha. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) are forecast in coastal and northern districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
  • Day 5 (Sept 9–10):
    Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely at many places across Odisha. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) are forecast across most districts, including the coastal belt, north interior, and western Odisha.
  • Day 6 & 7 (Sept 10–12):
    Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely at many places across the state. No weather warning has been issued for these two days.
  • Outlook (Sept 12–15):
    IMD has indicated no major change in the overall weather pattern for the subsequent three days.

On Friday, heavy showers lashed several districts. Padampur (Bargarh), Padmapur (Rayagada), and Jagannath Prasad (Ganjam) each recorded 9 cm of rainfall. Muruda (Mayurbhanj) and Bhandaripokhari (Bhadrak) registered 8 cm, while Bijepur, Dhamnagar, and Bahanga reported around 7 cm.

IMD has warned that heavy rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds may affect agricultural operations in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, and several coastal and western districts. Farmers are advised to take adequate precautions to protect standing crops.
