Rourkela: In a tragic incident, a contractual worker was killed in an accident at the Steel Melting Shop-2 (SMS-2) of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on Monday.

According to reports, the victim, identified as Abhiram Mahato (45), a resident of Bisra Jareikela, was critically injured after nearly two tonnes of slag fell on him while he was cutting jammed slag on a platform.

Mahato, employed by a contractor of Basanti Colony area, was on duty during the A-shift when the accident took place. The incident took place around 9 AM. He was initially rushed to the plant’s primary health center and subsequently shifted to Ispat General Hospital (IGH), where doctors declared him dead.

Following the incident, tense scenes unfolded at the IGH premises as labour unions gathered, demanding immediate compensation and a job for Mahato’s next of kin. His body has been kept at the IGH morgue.
