Bhubaneswar: A Special Vigilance Court in Brahmapur has convicted a retired secretary of Benapata Service Co-operative Society in Ganjam district in a government funds embezzlement case dating back to 1999-2003.
The court on Friday sentenced Mahadev Biswal, the former secretary of the society, to one year of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine following his conviction in the case investigated by Odisha Vigilance.
Biswal was prosecuted for allegedly misappropriating government money by manipulating the society’s cash registers during the period from 1999 to 2003. He was charge-sheeted under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(c) and 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and Sections 409, 467, 468 and 477-A of the Indian Penal Code.
Following the conviction, Odisha Vigilance said it would approach the competent authority to initiate steps for the stoppage of Biswal’s pension.
