Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Crime Branch has apprehended a cyber fraudster from West Bengal for duping a Paradip resident of over Rs 73 lakh through a digital arrest scam.
The accused, identified as Rohit Kumar Jaiswal (26), a resident of Howrah, was arrested following a complaint lodged by the victim at the Cyber Crime Police Station on May 15, 2024.
The victim, a private company employee, was allegedly contacted by cyber fraudsters impersonating CBI and Delhi Police officials. They falsely claimed that a parcel booked in his name, containing contraband, had been confiscated by Delhi Customs. Under duress, the victim transferred Rs 73,62,000 to the accused’s bank accounts over six days.
The Crime Branch launched an investigation, tracked down Jaiswal, and seized incriminating evidence, including mobile phones, SIM cards, and Aadhar cards. The accused’s bank accounts have been frozen, and he has been brought on transit remand to Odisha. Jaiswal will be produced before the court on Friday. The Odisha Crime Branch’s swift action has brought relief to the victim, and the investigation is underway.
