Bhubaneswar: Chief Secretary-cum-Chairman State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) Suresh Chandra Mahapatra released a book titled “A Pilot Study on Beach Litter Pollution: Paradeep 2019-20”, a publication of SPCB today.
Launching the volume Mahapatra said that the publication would pave the way to cover other future potential beaches in the State with an aim to protect our pristine coastline from contamination with polyaromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals, Micro Plastic, etc through Beach Litterarine floatables.
He said that such an effort under Integrated Coastal Zone Management Programme (ICZMP) would pave way for more publications.
Mahapatra congratulated the authors for the methodological analysis and useful outcome of the volume.
The book was released in the presence of Dr Mona Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary, Forest, Environment and Climate Change (FE&CC), Susanta Nanda, Director, FE&CC, and Dr K Murugesan, Member Secretary, SPCB.
The book is authored by Dr K Murugesan, N Mallick, Dr S S Pati, Dr S D Sharma, BS Panda, Dr S Mishra, Dr S Nayak, Er B Sarangi, and S K Mohanty who shared their
findings of a pilot study, first of its kind in the State as well as in the country on Beach Litter
Pollution along the coast of the industrial town of Odisha (Paradeep), its measures probable impacts and their management. SPCB is working on Integrated Coastal Zone Management Programme through its Coastal Management Cell (CMC), and has acquired expertise on a wide range of activities on Coastal Pollution since 2013.
The volume spells out the practical picture on marine litter generation at the global scale to regional end, their potential transport, categorization, influential climatic factors, and ultimate fate in an ecosystem with observations in a well-organized, easy-to-understand book to show how to navigate the complexities of the issue while maintaining green compliances.
