Bhubaneswar: A fast-track court in Cuttack sentenced a private tutor to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for repeatedly raping a minor student in the Cantonment area.
The court convicted Hafiz Noor Ataraj and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000. He will have to undergo an additional one year of imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority to pay Rs 4 lakh as compensation to the survivor.
According to reports, the incident took place on August 23, 2025, in the Cantonment area. The accused, who taught the minor at her home, allegedly raped the child repeatedly under the pretext of tutoring.
The victim’s family lodged a police complaint after the child disclosed the incident at home. Investigators collected substantial evidence before arresting Akhtar and producing him in court.
The verdict was delivered based on testimony and evidence presented during the trial.
