Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of possible flash floods in six districts of Odisha as Cyclone Arnab approaches the region, with heavy rainfall likely to trigger sudden flooding in vulnerable areas, a senior weather official said on Wednesday.
IMD Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Director Dr Manorama Mohanty said Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Ganjam and Gajapati were among the districts at risk of flash floods due to heavy rainfall associated with the cyclonic system.
She said Bhubaneswar and Kataka were also likely to receive rainfall, accompanied by winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph and gusting up to 55 kmph.
According to preliminary reports cited by Mohanty, Gopalpur recorded the highest rainfall at 96 mm, while Malkangiri reported a maximum wind speed of 57 kmph.
Rainfall and strong winds were expected to affect several parts of Odisha on Wednesday and Thursday, she said, adding that landslides were also possible in hilly areas due to heavy rain.
The potential for flash floods in vulnerable locations has raised concerns, particularly in southern Odisha, where intense rainfall could lead to sudden rises in water levels, disrupt road connectivity and affect normal life.
Further developments will depend on the movement and intensity of the cyclonic system, Mohanty said.
