Bhubaneswar: As predicted by IMD, cyclone may spare the state but heavy rainfall is likely to occur in coastal and adjoining districts of Odisha. Moderate to heavy rains are expected in Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Jagatsinghpur districts during the next two days.
Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das on Monday reviewed preparedness by different agencies of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) to meet an eventuality in the wake of cyclone Asani. The BMC is prepared with 72 shelters in three administrative zones of the city, Das said.
Following the review, Das along with Deputy Mayor Manjulata Kanhar setup a monitoring team with a couple of senior Corporators. The team finalised an action plan and toured the vulnerable pockets of the city today afternoon.
The team members have visited Rangamatia School and Mancheswar Railway School temporary shelters. Basic facilities like water, electricity, toilets and space for women and children were inspected and discussions were held with local residents regarding the preparedness.
The team along with community members urged people not to panic as the cyclone is not likely to impact Odisha. In case of waterlogging, the civic body is fully prepared to handle the situation, the BMC stated. Though IMD has forecast less impact on the State, the BMC will be on alert till the cyclone passes away, the Mayor said.
The corporators along with community members counselled people in vulnerable areas. The corporators who accompanied the Mayor today were Pritinanda Routray, Biranchi Narayan Mahasupakar, Amaresh Jena, Bharati Singh, Manasirani Sundaray, Binayeeni Jena, Puspanjali Sethi, Mihir Kumar Rout, Bharat Lenka and Ranjulata Ray.
