Bolangir: In a remarkable story of perseverance, determination and academic excellence, Rebati Swain, the daughter of a daily wage labourer from Odisha’s Bolangir district, has emerged as the topper in the postgraduate examinations of Rajendra University, inspiring students across the state.
The results, announced on Friday evening, placed Rebati at the top of the university’s merit list with an outstanding CGPA of 9.67. A postgraduate student of Zoology, she achieved the feat through years of dedication and hard work despite significant financial challenges.
Rebati’s father, Santosh Swain, earns a livelihood as a daily wage labourer, while her mother, Jayanti Swain, manages the household. Determined to provide quality education to their children, the couple moved from Kulthipal village in Bolangir district’s Puinala block to Bolangir town in 2021, renting a modest house in Gandhinagar Pada so their children could pursue better educational opportunities. Their sacrifices have now borne fruit.
Rebati began her education in her village school and later secured admission to Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya, where she completed her higher secondary studies. She joined Rajendra University for her undergraduate studies in 2021 and continued her academic journey with the same commitment that eventually led her to become the university topper.
Speaking about her achievement, Rebati credited her success to the unwavering support of her parents, teachers, professors, university authorities, and siblings. She said her dream is to become a scientist and contribute to society by developing medicines for cancer patients.
Her achievement has drawn widespread appreciation across the region. Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling congratulated the young scholar, extended financial assistance, and assured continued support for her higher studies.
For many students, Rebati’s journey is a powerful reminder that determination and perseverance can overcome even the most difficult circumstances. From a labourer’s household in rural Bolangir to the top of a university merit list, her story stands as an inspiring example of how dreams can be achieved through hard work, family support and an unwavering commitment to education.
