Death Toll Of Odia Workers Killed In TN Ammonia Gas Leak Tragedy Rises To 9

Bhubaneswar: In a heartbreaking development, another Odia woman has died in the major ammonia gas leak incident at a seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district, taking the death toll of Odia migrant workers to nine.

The latest victim has been identified as Rita Juang from Tangiri Dubanali Sahi under Telkoi block in Keonjhar district. She succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.

It is pertinent to mention that the tragic incident occurred on June 21, 2026, when ammonia gas leaked from a private seafood export and processing unit at Tiruvallur district.

A large number of the victims belong to the Juang community, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) from Keonjhar district, who had migrated to Tamil Nadu in search of livelihood. Most of the deceased were young women in their late teens or early twenties.

With Rita Juang’s death, the total number of Odia victims has climbed to nine.

Several other Odia workers are still undergoing treatment in various hospitals in Tamil Nadu, with some reported to be in critical condition.
