Bhubaneswar: The depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of North Odisha-West Bengal coasts intensified into a deep depression, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
At 5:30 am on Monday, the system was centred near latitude 21.3°N and longitude 88.1°E, about 40 km south of Sagar Island, 70 km east-southeast of Digha, 100 km south of Diamond Harbour in West Bengal, 120 km east-southeast of Balasore in Odisha, and 120 km south-southwest of Canning in West Bengal, informed the IMD.
The depression moved very slowly northwards with a speed of just 3 kmph during the past six hours. It is very likely to continue moving nearly north-northwestwards and cross the West Bengal-North Odisha coast between Balasore and Canning around the afternoon today.
Under its influence, coastal districts of North Odisha and South West Bengal are expected to experience heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions.
The IMD authorities have advised people in the affected areas to stay alert. Fishermen have been urged not to venture into the sea until further notice.
