Bhubaneswar: A well-marked low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coasts is likely to intensify into a depression within the next 12 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.
The developing system is expected to move in a northwesterly direction and cross the North Odisha-West Bengal coast during the forenoon of July 27, 2026.
The weather system, which was earlier identified as a low-pressure area over the West Bengal coast and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, has gained strength and become a well-marked low-pressure area as of 5:30 am on Sunday.
According to the IMD, the system is likely to concentrate into a depression over the same region while moving closer towards the coast. The intensification of the system has prompted weather authorities to keep coastal districts of Odisha and West Bengal under close watch.
The approaching depression is likely to enhance rainfall activity across several parts of Odisha and West Bengal. Coastal districts may witness heavy rainfall spells, accompanied by gusty winds and rough sea conditions under the influence of the system.
