Bhubaneswar: Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania along with DCP Jagmohan Meena visited the Bhingarapur area in Balianta on Friday to review the situation following the mob lynching leading to death of a young person in the region.

As per report, the senior officers reached the crime spot and took stock of the ground situation. They were accompanied by Balianta police officials during the inspection and investigation.

Speaking to the media after inspecting the spot, DGP Y.B. Khurania said, “Yesterday, an unfortunate incident occurred here. We have come to assess the situation on the ground. The Commissionerate Police will take an exemplary decision after a thorough investigation. So far, five persons have been arrested and more arrests will follow as the investigation progresses.”

”The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon when two youths were allegedly assaulted by locals after two women accused them of attempted sexual assault following a motorcycle collision. One of the victims, Soumya Ranjan Swain (32), a Government Railway Police constable, was beaten to death by the mob, while the second youth, Om Prakash Rout, is undergoing treatment in critical condition.

Police have so far arrested five persons in connection with the lynching. Further arrests are expected as the investigation progresses based on CCTV footage and viral videos of the incident.

The DGP’s visit comes amid mounting tension in the area and appeals from the victim not to arrest local residents who had intervened to rescue her.
