Bhubaneswar: A notorious criminal was injured in a police encounter in Sambalpur. Over 25 cases of murder, dacoity, and loot have been registered against the criminal, Sitaram Sarangi, in various police stations across Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh districts.
The police tracked him down near Rangiatikra and tried to arrest him. Sarangi fired at the police in a bid to escape, prompting a retaliatory attack that left him shot in the leg.
He was admitted to VIMSAR, Burla, and items including a country-made pistol, cartridges, a bike, and Rs 1 lakh cash were seized. The investigation is ongoing.
On Saturday, two rape accused in the Belpahar police station area in Jharsuguda district were shot by police while allegedly attempting to escape. The accused identified as Sheikh Asif and Abhishek Barik were being forwarded to court when the duo attempted to flee from police custody.
