Bhubaneswar: A notorious criminal suffered critical injuries in police encounter at Suando village under Satyabadi police limits in Puri district on Thursday.
The criminal identified as Kalu Bhol was planning to commit a major crime at Suando bridge. On a tip-off, a team from Satyabadi police station raided the area and attempted to apprehend him.
Kalu first opened fire in a bid to escape. Police too retaliated in self-defence in which Kalu suffered bullet injuries on his right leg.
He was rescued and rushed to the district headquarters hospital. Now, he is under treatment, police said.
Kalu is a resident of Batagaan under Sadar police limits in Puri. He is involved in various crimes since 2009. As many as 18 cases are pending against him in several police stations in the district, police added.
“He was involved in cases like robbery, extortions, bombing. He usually commits crime using arms and ammunitions. He was absconding since August after committing a crime. We were regularly tracking his movement”, said Bishnu Prasad Pati, Puri Additional SP.
A 7.65 mm pistol and live bullets have been seized from him, he added.
