Bhubaneswar: The body of a student who had gone missing in the river Mahanadi near Balisahi under Jagatpur police limits in Cuttack city on Friday, was recovered on Saturday.
According to sources, two Class VIII students identified as Arya Nayak and Manoranjan Behera of Rajkishore Vidypith drowned while taking a bath in Mahanadi near Balisahi on Friday.
While Arya was rescued and declared dead by the doctors at the nearest hospital, the fire-fighting personnel failed to trace Manoranjan till last night.
The Fire Department again resumed the search operation on Saturday morning and fished out his body.
The tragedy occurred when a group of 11 classmates went to bathe in the Mahanadi River after their exams. Arya and Manoranjan were swept away by the strong currents while bathing. Their classmates immediately informed the school authorities, who alerted the fire department and the families of the missing students, said sources.
Rescue efforts began promptly, and Arya’s body was recovered yesterday evening. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead. The search operation resumed today, and Manoranjan’s body was recovered after an extensive search.
