Bhubaneswar: In a shocking and heartless incident, a 39-year-old man brutally murdered his 75-year-old mother by beating her with a stick after she refused to give him money to buy liquor in Patuli village under Rajkanika block in Kendrapara district.
The deceased has been identified as Haramani Sahu (75). The accused is her son Bijay Sahu (39). The incident occurred on Saturday late night.
According to police, Bijay, who is habitual drunkard and unmarried, frequently harassed his parents for money to buy alcohol. On Saturday night, when his parents were resting after dinner, Bijay reached home in an inebriated condition and demanded money from his mother. When Haramani and her husband Nabaghan Sahu refused, Bijay flew into a rage and started arguing.
When his mother protested, Bijay allegedly picked up a wooden stick and mercilessly beat her. Despite attempts by his father Nabaghan Sahu, a retired CRPF jawan, to save her, Bijay continued the assault. Haramani sustained severe injuries and died on the spot. Nabaghana later reached Rajkanika Police station and lodged a complaint against his son. Acting on the complaint, police arrested the accused son.
Locals said Bijay regularly created disturbances in the house and the village after consuming liquor. His elder brother Anil Sahu had already moved out after selling his share of property due to frequent family disputes, while the younger son passed away last year.
The gruesome incident has left the village in shock. Rajkanika police have registered a case of murder and further investigation is underway.
Polic, meanwhile, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem.
