ECoR Issues Warning Against Railway Track Reels, Selfies

Bhubaneswar: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has initiated a strict awareness campaign to caution the public, especially youth and social media enthusiasts, against the deadly and illegal practice of taking selfies, shooting videos, or creating “Reels” on or near railway tracks and on running trains. Such reckless acts are not only life-threatening but also punishable under the Railways Act, 1989.

The move comes in response to a disturbing trend where individuals compromise their safety and railway operations for social media fame, often leading to tragic accidents. ECoR emphasized that railway tracks, station premises, and moving trains are high-risk areas, not entertainment backdrops.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have been directed to adopt a ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy towards violators. Anyone caught engaging in such activities will face strict legal action, including prosecution under the Railways Act, 1989, with imprisonment and fines.

ECoR appeals to citizens, especially students and teenagers, to prioritize safety over social media stunts and respect safety zones. Parents and teachers are urged to counsel youngsters about the dangers and legal consequences of such actions.

The awareness campaign includes public announcements, digital media messages, and physical patrolling to prevent further incidents.
