Keonjhar: A 60-year-old man died in a tragic accident after falling through the asbestos roof of an abandoned house while plucking mangoes in Keonjhar district on Tuesday, officials said.
The deceased was identified as Rabindra Sutar, a resident of the Keshadura Pala area under Ghasipura block.
According to local sources, Sutar had gone to a nearby mango orchard and climbed onto the roof of an abandoned house to pluck mangoes. While he was on the roof, the asbestos sheets gave way, causing him to fall into the locked structure below.
Hearing his cries for help, local residents alerted his family members. However, as the house was locked, Sutar remained trapped inside for nearly an hour. Family members and villagers eventually broke open the lock, rescued him and rushed him to Anandpur Sub-Divisional Hospital.
Doctors at the hospital declared him brought dead.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the locality, with residents expressing shock over the unusual and unfortunate accident.
