Bhubaneswar: A one-year-old elephant calf died after falling into a well at Kathabaunsuli village under the Sadar forest range in Keonjhar district late on Thursday night.

According to reports, the incident occurred late last night when a herd of elephants was passing through the area. The calf, part of a 10-member herd, fell into the well while the herd was foraging for food in Mohan Charan Mahanta’s vegetable farm in Kathabaunsuli village.

The herd attempted to rescue the calf by filling the well with stones, but their efforts led to rocks falling and striking the calf’s head, causing fatal injuries. The calf likely drowned in the well after sustaining severe head trauma.

Upon being informed, the Forest Department personnel retrieved the calf’s body and will conduct a post-mortem at Padampur Nursery.
