Bhubaneswar: The carcass of an elephant calf was recovered on Wednesday morning from a pond at Nidhipur village under Begunia block in Khordha district.
According to sources, a herd of wild elephants has been frequently moving through Haj and Siko panchayat areas for the past few months. However, villagers spotted the body of the baby elephant floating in the pond this morning and immediately informed the Forest Department.
Upon receiving the information, Forest Department officials rushed to the spot and retrieved the carcass. They have initiated an investigation into the incident.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that the baby elephant may have accidentally drowned while trying to drink water from the pond. However, the exact cause of death will be ascertained after further investigation and post-mortem examination.
The Forest Department is continuing its probe into the matter.
