Cuttack: In yet another instance of man-animal conflict, a decomposed carcass of an elephant calf has been recovered from a cashew forest in Athagarh block of Odisha’s Cuttack district.
According to reports, the carcass was recovered near the Genapada Beat area on Sadupa road in Athagarh Forest Division on Thursday. Two wild pigs and a cow were also found dead near the elephant carcass.
After examining the carcass, Forest Department personnel assume that the elephant died two to three days ago. The Forest Department estimates that the calf was only 5 years old.
However, the exact reason for the elephant calf’s death is yet to be ascertained. According to Forest Department personnel, it will be clear whether the calf died due to illness or was hunted down by poachers only after they received its autopsy report.
