Sundargarh: A farmer was mauled to death by an elephant in Gargadbahal village under Badgaon village block of Sundargarh district in the wee hours of Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Hiralal Behera of Gargadbahal village.
According to reports, Hiralal had gone to save his grain stock at around 3.30 am on Tuesday morning after a herd of 30-odd elephants that had been roaming outside the village for the last few days invaded his grain stock. He was mauled by the herd while trying to protect his grain stock and died on the spot.
On being informed, Forest department personnel reached the spot and recovered the body. The department also launched an initiative to drive the elephant herd to a nearby forest.
