Jagatsinghpur: Eminent freedom fighter Biswanath Das, popularly known as Balikuda Gandhi, has passed away at the age of 105. He was suffering from age related ailments for long. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College in Cuttack.
Das, a resident of Bhagaban Sindhola village under Balikuda tehsil in Jagatsinghpur district, had joined the freedom struggle at the behest of Mahatma Gandhi from his student days. He played a major role in the Quit India movement. He was imprisoned during Quit India Movement in 1942 and 1943.
In 2012, the then President Pranab Mukherjee honoured him at Rashtrapati Bhawan. Similarly, he was honored for the second time by the then President Ram Nath Kovind on the occasion of the 2020 Independence Day.
