Excise Commissioner Suspends SI, ASI Over Third-Degree Allegation In Kendrapara

Bhubaneswar: An Excise Sub-Inspector and an Assistant Sub-Inspector posted at Pattamundai Excise Police Station in Kendrapara were suspended on Thursday by the Excise Commissioner following allegations of third-degree torture.

The Excise officers faced the ire of the Excise Commissioner have been identified as SI Chhayakanta Nayak and ASI Pradeep Mallik.

The action comes after a youth, Binod, alleged he was beaten by excise personnel during a raid.

According to sources, SI Nayak and his team raided Baradia village under Rajnagar area over an alleged illicit liquor trade after being informed by Binod. The Excise personnel were carrying out the raid when Binod allegedly began filming them on his phone. The officials allegedly objected to being recorded and detained him. He was allegedly physically assaulted by the excise personnel.

Binod later approached Rajnagar Police Station and filed a complaint against six persons, including the SI, accusing them of physical assault.

On basis of the complaint, police have registered a case and started a probe. Based on the preliminary inquiry, the Excise Commissioner placed the SI and ASI under suspension.

Further investigation into the incident is underway.
