Bhubaneswar: Capital Police Station officials have arrested a known criminal, Tapan Nayak, after spotting him loitering suspiciously near the Master Canteen bus stand. The breakthrough came with the help of the Facial Recognition System (FRS).
As per reports, police checked his identity through the FRS after police stopped and questioned the man. The technology instantly matched him with existing records and identified him as a habitual offender with a long criminal history.
Police came to know from the technology that Nayak is a resident of Bayababa Basti under Saheed Nagar police station limits. He had earlier spent two years in jail after being convicted of theft in 2023. Records show he is linked to at least 12 cases involving theft and violent robberies. Along with his associates, he reportedly targeted late-night travellers at railway stations and other public places, snatching mobile phones and other valuables.
Police said the facial recognition tool has proved highly effective in swiftly identifying habitual offenders by providing instant access to their criminal background and photographs. In this case, the system enabled officers to act promptly.
Police believe Nayak’s arrest will help check the recent rise in thefts and robberies that have been troubling commuters in the city.
