Jajpur: A man has been arrested by police in Jajpur district for allegedly cheating a woman of ₹1.4 lakh by promising to secure the release of her son from jail and later threatening her with dire consequences for refusing to pay more money.

The case was registered at Korei Police Station following a complaint lodged by Prabhati Sahu of Chandama village under the police station limits.

According to the complaint, the accused, identified as Abinash Sahu of Fazalpur village, allegedly collected ₹1,40,000 from her after assuring that he would arrange for her son’s release from jail. However, despite receiving the money, her son remains in custody.

The complainant further alleged that the accused subsequently demanded additional money and threatened to hire goons to kill her if she failed to comply with his demands.

Based on the complaint, police have registered a case under Sections 318(4), 316(5), and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation.

During the preliminary inquiry, police reportedly found that the accused had allegedly been cheating several people by introducing himself as a Divisional Forest Officer (DFO). Locals also claimed that he frequently posed for photographs with senior police officials and had participated in the recent visit of the President to Jajpur, helping him gain credibility among unsuspecting people.

Police suspect that more victims may have been duped through similar promises and are examining all aspects of the case.

Korei Inspector-in-Charge Rakesh Kumar Tripathi said the investigation is being conducted under the supervision of a Sub-Inspector and that further details would emerge after a thorough probe.
