Bhubaneswar: In a major crackdown, Badabazar police raided two illegal spice manufacturing units in Berhampur city and seized a huge quantity of adulterated spices.
According to reports, around 3,000 kg of adulterated turmeric and chilli powder, along with four grinding machines, were recovered during the operation. Two persons have been detained and are being questioned.
The raids were carried out late Sunday night at two different places – Laxmi Nrusingha Nagar’s Seventh Lane and Prahallad Nagar.
During the search at the Laxmi Nrusingha Nagar unit, police found large sacks filled with unpacked turmeric and chilli powder. Preliminary probe revealed that the accused were allegedly mixing artificial colours and rice bran with spices to increase quantity and then selling it in the local market at cheaper rates.
Officials also found that the factory was operating without GST registration. The seized packets had no brand label and were being sold without any valid license.
