Phulbani: A man was allegedly hacked to death by his cousin over a family dispute in Kandhamal district on Friday, police said.
The incident took place at Sarkesaru village under Sudrukumpa panchayat within Sadar police limits in the morning. According to preliminary information, Rabindra Majhi allegedly entered the house of his cousin Ratnakar Majhi while he was sleeping and attacked him with a axe.
When Ratnakar’s son Shiva woke up and raised an alarm while trying to intervene, Rabindra allegedly attacked him too before fleeing the spot.
Hearing the cries, family members and neighbours rushed to the house and shifted the injured Ratnakar and Shiva to the Phulbani District Headquarters Hospital. Ratnakar, however, succumbed to his injuries. Shiva was given primary treatment and later referred to MKCG Medical College & Hospital Brahmapur for further treatment.
Police subsequently reached the village, arrested Rabindra Majhi and seized the axe allegedly used in the attack. Further investigation is underway.
