Dhenkanal: A woman and her family members, at Gopalpur under Motanga police limits of Dhenkanal district, were thrashed by villagers and forced to drink horse urine over suspicion of practising sorcery.
Reportedly, some influential people of the village were at loggerheads with one villager Ramesh Chandra Mahakud. On May 15, they called a kalisi (shaman) who performed some rituals and claimed that Ramesh’s wife Duhita is practising sorcery.
After hearing this, the villagers dragged Duhita out of her house and thrashed her. She was also forced to drink horse urine. When Ramesh and his son protested, they also received the same treatment from the villagers.
While the family had lodged a complaint against 29 persons at Motanga Police Station on May 17, no action has been reportedly taken over it till date. In fear of the villagers, Ramesh’s family has now taken shelter at a place outside the village.
