Berhampur: A family in Paralakhemundi on Monday bid a tearful adieu and performed the last rites of their pet dog who had been with them for the last 16 years. A grand funeral procession was taken through the town accompanied by sounds of traditional musical instruments, DJ, and fireworks.
Reportedly, Tunu Gouda of Paralakhemundi was born in a very poor family and used to work at various shops to support his family after his father’s death. At that time, he met a puppy and brought it home. Gouda named it Anjali who gradually became a part of his family.
Though he adopted many dogs in course of time, Gouda believes Anjali brought good fortune to him. His financial condition improved and he was even able to build a house of his own.
Gouda and his family were devastated after the death of Anjali on Monday morning. All the family members were unconsolable after the pet’s death. They bathed the pet dog with turmeric water and garlanded it before taking out its funeral procession. Later, Gouda performed the last rites of Anjali as per the traditional rituals.
He has promised to perform other post-death rituals and organise a community feast for the pet dog just like it is done after the death of a human being.
