Sundaragada: A 40-year-old farmer died after a live electric wire snapped and fell on him while he was working in his agricultural field in Sundargarh district on Tuesday, police said.
The incident took place at around 11 am in Geetapahadi village under Beheradihi Panchayat within the jurisdiction of Kinjirkela Police Station.
The deceased was identified as Dhamika Toppo, a resident of the same village.
According to reports, Toppo was uprooting paddy seedlings from his bari (homestead field) and carrying a bundle towards the main field when a nearby overhead electric wire suddenly snapped and fell on him. He came in contact with the live wire and suffered severe electrocution.
Co-workers present at the spot rushed to his rescue and immediately shifted him to Kinjirkela Community Health Centre. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
On being informed, Kinjirkela Police reached the hospital, seized the body and sent it to the Sundaragada District Headquarters Hospital for post-mortem examination.
After the autopsy, the body was handed over to the bereaved family. Police have registered an unnatural death case and initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident.
