Khordha: A father and son allegedly died by suicide in a tragic incident linked to a debt-related dispute in Kesapur village in Khordha district, police and local sources said on Saturday.
According to reports, a 70-year-old man Nabaghana Pradhan of Kesapur village under Banapur police limits allegedly died by suicide after jumping in front of a moving train on Saturday morning.
Soon after learning about his father’s death, his 30-year-old son Tofan Pradhan allegedly consumed poison. Family members and villagers rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed during treatment.
Villagers said the son had been living away from the village and had returned home only two days ago. During his stay, he reportedly came to know that his father had borrowed a substantial amount of money. An argument is said to have erupted between the two over the issue.
Distressed by the situation, the elderly man allegedly took the extreme step, sources said.
Following the incident, Banapur police reached the spot and initiated an investigation. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
The twin deaths have left residents of the village in shock and mourning. The last rites of both the father and son were conducted on Saturday afternoon amid an atmosphere of grief.
