Bhubaneswar: The Ferozepur district administration in Punjab on Wednesday deferred the proposed Rath Yatra at the local Shri Jagannath Temple in Ferozepur Cantonment after the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) objected to its scheduling on a non-traditional date.

The SJTA, in a communication issued on Tuesday (May 19, 2026), described the conduct of Rath Yatra on “random” or unapproved dates as a sensitive issue, stating that it could hurt the religious sentiments of devotees. The objection was raised against the planned celebration scheduled for May 23, 2026, at the temple in Ferozepur Cantonment, which was not in line with the traditional observance followed at the Jagannath Temple in Puri.

Acting on the communication, the Ferozepur district administration summoned the temple organisers for a meeting on May 20, 2026 (Today), to review the concerns.

During the discussion, officials reportedly explained the customary timing and religious significance of the Rath Yatra as observed at Puri, considered the principal seat of Lord Jagannath worship.

“In this regard, the organisers of Shri Jagannath Temple were called by this office on May 20, 2026, where they were informed about the appropriate timing of the Rath Yatra and the significance of Shri Jagannath Puri Ji. The temple administrators have provided their written consent to postpone the Rath Yatra,” the letter read.

Following the deliberations, the temple authorities submitted written consent agreeing to defer the proposed event. The district administration later confirmed that the decision was taken to maintain religious sanctity and ensure alignment with established traditions.

The Rath Yatra, which marks the annual journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra, is one of the most significant religious festivals in India and is most prominently celebrated at the Jagannath Temple in Puri, attracting millions of devotees from across the country and abroad.
