Bhubaneswar: The joyous Diwali festival turned out to be tragic in many places across Odisha on Sunday as several people were injured and a number of fire incidents due to firecrackers were reported from different parts of the state.
A massive fire broke out at a tent house godown at Kali Mandir Sahi in Baripada on Sunday evening. According to reports, five fire engines were engaged to bring the fire under control. The fire, suspected to have been triggered by a sky lantern, damaged items worth several lakh rupees.
Meanwhile, six persons including, three children and a woman, received critical burn injuries on Sunday while bursting firecrackers at separate places in Jajpur district, including Byasanagar and Korei localities.
A 12-year-old boy sustained critical injuries in a mishap while bursting firecrackers at Bhela village under Komna police limits in Odisha’s Nuapada district on Sunday. According to reports, the boy was bursting crackers in a steel glass which caused an explosion injuring the boy.
Fire engulfed a portion of an apartment building in Sambalpur on Sunday but fortunately, no one was injured. According to reports, the fire broke out on the third floor of Shyama Vatika apartment in Sambalpur’s Khetrajpur area after a Diwali rocket landed inside the apartment.
Meanwhile, over 100 people, who sustained injuries while bursting firecrackers during the Diwali celebrations on Sunday, were rushed to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar. The hospital authorities have formed a special team for the treatment of the injured persons.
According to a report, fire incidents during Diwali celebrations have caused injuries to more than 125 people in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar in Odisha.
