Bhubaneswar: Continuous rainfall triggered by the Cyclone Arnab has thrown normal life out of gear in Gajapati district, with flood-like situations and landslides reported from several areas.
According to reports, the Bansadhara river at Kashinagar is flowing above the danger mark. While the danger level is 54.60 metres, the river is currently at 55.60 metres. In view of the rising water level, all 22 gates of the Gotta Barrage in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district have been opened and 48,576 cusecs of floodwater is being discharged.
The other major river of the district, Mahendratanaya, is also in spate and has inundated Baghasala village under Gosani block. With water levels rising continuously, floodwater is threatening to enter Paralakhemundi town.
The district has been witnessing heavy rain for the last three days, causing sharp rise in water levels of rivers and streams and inundating roads. A major landslide has also been reported on the Kaipur-Gangabada main road. Nearly 50 metres of the stretch is covered with mud and rocks following hillside collapse, disrupting connectivity and leaving commuters stranded.
The administration is on high alert and is closely monitoring the river levels and water discharge from the upper catchment areas.
