Cuttack: Floodwaters from the Hirakud Dam have reached Mundali in Cuttack, with over 4 lakh cusecs expected to flow through the Mahanadi River today.
According to reports, the floodwaters are being discharged from the Hirakud Dam through 20 gates, with 13 gates opened on the left bank and 7 gates on the right bank, in a controlled release to manage the rising water levels. The current water level in the Hirakud reservoir stands at 608.04 feet.
The dam is currently receiving 2,33,824 cusecs of water per second, while 3,32,491 cusecs are being discharged. Out of the total discharge, 2,94,300 cusecs are being released through the spillway, and 34,956 cusecs are being channelled for power generation, according to official sources.
It is learnt that the Hirakud Dam has a total of 98 gates, comprising 64 sluice gates and 34 crest gates. The dam’s maximum water-holding capacity is 630 feet.
The situation is being closely monitored, and the state government is taking necessary precautions to ensure public safety. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions if necessary.
