Balasore: Akshaya Kumar Acharya, former Congress MLA of Nilagiri constituency and a driving force behind Nilgiri’s development, breathed his last at Balasore District Headquarters Hospital. He was 76.
According to reports, he had been suffering from cancer for a long time and was undergoing treatment in Bombay. However, his health suddenly deteriorated in the wee hours of Friday, and he was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital in Nilgiri. He was then shifted to the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital, where he passed away while undergoing treatment there.
Acharya, known as the ‘Development Man’ of Nilagiri, was a two-time MLA from the constituency, winning elections in 1980 and 1995. During his tenure, he spearheaded numerous development projects, including the construction of a bus stand, the establishment of NACs, the development of dams and irrigation systems, and the setting up of schools and colleges.
His contributions to Nilagiri’s growth earned him widespread recognition. Acharya’s demise has been met with grief in the region. He is survived by his family.
